If you are looking for something specific, please mention your region. What to use in general: Paper - use paper that is heavier than regular printer paper (regular printer paper is ~20lb/ ~75gsm). Thicker paper = more sturdy model, but harder to cut/fold/score. Thinner paper = less sturdy model, but easier to cut/fold/score.
Printing Inkjet - ink and printers are cheaper to replace than toner and laserjets, and the edges hold up well after scoring/folding, but it doesn't print on all paper types, the resolution may be lower, and any moisture (e.g. Sweat from hands) can ruin the colour. Laser - able to print on all types of paper, can handle moisture, and can print at a higher resolution than ink, but can crack and flake off when scored/folded, and toner can be more expensive than ink. Cutting - a self-healing cutting mat is an essential tool along with an Xacto knife or similar brand with #11 blades, or a box cutter knife.
Scissors can also be used by themselves, or together with a knife. Knife for detailed parts, scissors for straight cuts) Folding - Run the back of your Xacto blade, or an empty ballpoint pen, or any similar small blunt edge along the line of a glue tab with enough pressure to leave an indent but not enough to cut it, then fold. You can do this on either front of back of a piece, but front is easier. Use a ruler (preferably metal) to help. For curved parts, it is better to curl them around a round object (such as a coloured pencil or your Xacto knife handle) by rubbing the object against the back of the piece. Gluing - recommending Tacky PVA/White glue (ie.
Aleene's Original Tacky Glue in North America). Apply glue with a toothpick and evenly spread a thin layer of it on a tab.
Use tweezers if tabs are small/too difficult to reach with fingers. Some have had good results with hot glue, especially on larger models - it is quick to set and won't cause the kinds of issues that 'wet' glues have (paper rippling, ink smearing). Pepakura was working fine, before I upgraded to the latest version on Linux Mint 19. Since the upgrades. (Registered), I can load a file by dragging and dropping. If I try to save, it crashes. Export, same thing.
It's not a problem with registration. Or, I wouldn't be getting save or export options at all. So, I tried switching to Ultimate Papercraft 3D (registered). It was working ok. Then, somewhere along the line, it went south, and now I can either get a dual window (3D) or a single window (2D), but not a split 2D / 3D windows (the default). I've tried deleting the settings.
I've tried deleting and reinstalling the software. Neither program supports Linux, so, I can't ask for support.
Wine is what I'm using, and it's got no updates for the current versions of Ultimate Papercraft or Pepakura. I've got another PC, using Linux Mint, 18.3. Pepakura works fine on that PC. But, not on my default PC. The other PC is my wife's. I'm also using Blender w/Paper Export Addon.
Preferred software is Pepakura. Ultimate Papercraft 3D, even if it was Windows, still leaves a LOT to be desired in workflow and functionality compared to Pepakura. I'm bouncing back and forth between PCs and software to try to get workable models - even so far as screen caps (Converted to SVG using Inkscape). Which in terms of wanting to export to the PDO gallery, doesn't work. I've looked at.
There are either discontinued programs, UV Unwrap (not what I'm looking for or tailored to the task of Papercraft), or apps (I don't have an IPad or a Mac), or written for the Mac (I don't have a Mac. What I do have is Linux and Wine. Which was working fine until recently. Any suggestions? Thanx • • • • •.
Ok, went over to. Their rules explicitly state, NOT for linux support. My fault for not reading.
I DID figure out a workaround. Using Virtual Box and Bodhi (Moeksha) which has Wine Support built in, I setup a shared folder for my Pepakura files, installed Pepakura. After that, I could run Pepakura, work with my files inside the VirtualBox, and likely, email them to myself outside of the VB for further action. Either Inkscape is already installed or I may install it at some point, just to be able to additionally tinker with the files outside of Pepakura inside the VB.
